Why do travel agents charge different prices for the SAME flight?

After going to 3 different travel agents today (thomsons, sta travel and trailfinders) i discovered they all sold the same BA flight...but with the most expensive (thomsons) it was over £100 more! why is this? i may have to start asking the people on my flight how much they payed.LOL

  1. they basically add whatever they think they can get away with!
  2. actually, barely anyone on the same flight pays the same amount of money for the same flight they're all on... weird thing. hate it. i need to fly regularly and every time i have to spend hours finding the best fares, which can change importantly in a matter of minutes and through different travel agents
  3. the airplane has so many of each cost per seat. on a 747 international ... there may be only 10 "free" frequent flyer seats the seats are fares qouted "Q " is one of the lower fare seats. you used to be able to waitlist the different fare seat codes so when they cleared you could grab them. travel agents do not book many flights these days. they had the software ... SABRE ... that could be capable of doing this. figure out when your airline choice reservations expire and try at that time. i.e. american airlines expires at midnight usually everyday. better to try aa website midnight in us time to get less expensive seat. if someone has a res that has not paid it technically expires if not paid
  4. I THINK WHAT A LOT OF THEM DO IS ADVERTISE THE CHEAPEST FLIGHTS AND THEN WHEN THEY HAVE SO MANY BOOKINGS THEY PUT IT UP AND UP BUT IT SHOULD STAY THE SAME PRICE FOR EVERYONE JUST ANOTHER CON FOR US TRAVELLERS.
